A gift should make the next chapter easier
It can be disappointing to receive a lovely device and discover that familiar books are awkward to open. Before choosing, ask what service or shop the reader already uses. That small conversation can matter more than keeping every detail a surprise.
What DRM means
DRM means digital rights management, a system that controls access to some digital books. Kobo explains that some protected books need an authorised application such as Adobe Digital Editions. A device supporting EPUB does not automatically mean every protected EPUB will open without extra steps.
Check a real book, not a generic claim
Look up one title or existing purchase through the reader’s usual service and check the device’s instructions. Do not assume accounts, library services and formats work identically in every country. Keep regional availability and the actual book source separate from the hardware description.
Give a choice they can continue using
Compare the reading routine, account requirements and seller’s gift or return terms. We have not tested a device’s screen or battery here. The most useful gift is one that fits the books the person wants to read next, with a manageable way to start.
